Sunland, Inc. has announced a recall of almond butter and peanut butter products due to the risk of Salmonella food poisoning. This recall was prompted by an outbreak of Salmonella infections associated with eating Trader Joe’s Valencia Creamy Salted Peanut Butter, which is manufactured by Sunland. At least 29 people in 18 states were sickened in the outbreak between June 11, 2012 and September 2, 2012. Sunland recalled all of its almond butter and peanut butter products manufactured between May 1, 2012 and September 24, 2012.
States reporting illnesses include the following:
Arizona, California, Connecticut, Washington, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Virginia.
The recalled almond butter and peanut butter were distributed nationally to numerous large supermarket chains and sold under a number of brands, including Archer, Earth Balance, Fresh & Easy, Heinen’s, Joseph’s, Natural Value, Naturally More, Open Nature, Peanut Power Butter, Serious Food, Silly Prices, Snaclite, Sprouts Farmers Market, Sunland and Trader Joe’s. This recall only applies to products with best-if-used-by dates between May 1, 2013 and September 24, 2013 (stamped on the side of the jar’s label below the lid of the jar).
