At least 14 people in 11 states have contracted Listeria infections (listeriosis) in an outbreak that has been linked to Ricotta Salata Frescolina, a sheep’s milk cheese from Italy sold by Forever Cheese Inc. to retailers and restaurants in CA, CO, D.C., FL, GA, IL, IN, MA, MD, ME, MT, NJ, NM, NY, OH, OR, PA, VA, WA between June 20 and August 9, 2012. One of the retailers who received the cheese may be Whole Foods Market. In response to this outbreak, Forever Cheese has recalled Ricotta Salata Frescolina:
Forever Cheese lot # T9425 and/or production code 441202, from one specific production date due to possible Listeria Monocytogenes contamination. The cheese in question is Ricotta Salata brand Frescolina from one production date coded 441202 on the original wheel.
Listeria bacteria can cause serious illness and Listeria wrongful death. Complications of Listeria food poisoning include the following:
- Septic shock (Listeria sepsis)
- Listeria meningitis
- Encephalitis (brain swelling)
- Hydrocephalus
- Pregnant women at risk of miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth, infection of newborn baby.
