The May 2014 recall of Gel-E Donut pillows and Squishon 2 cushions has been updated because of 12 new complaints of visible mold on these products. One baby has been sickened by the mold. The recalling firm is Children’s Medical Ventures LLC, part of Philips Medical Systems, Inc. After mold was found on the products, testing was done:
Two commonly-found molds were detected: Cladosporium and Penicillium Fungi. Cladosporium has been known to cause several different types of serious fungal infections, including skin, eye, sinus, and brain infections especially in weakened or critically ill patients. Cladosporium and Penicillium Fungi can also cause difficulty in breathing or an allergic reaction.
Mold Can Cause Fungal Infections
Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) patients and pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) patients are generally already sick. These babies are much more sensitive to molds and can more easily contract fungal infections from mold-contaminated products. Even if a package is opened, mold is found and the package thrown away, the mold spores could find their way to a baby’s air space. Once breathed in, the baby could get seriously ill or die.
Product Description
- Gel-E Donut – 92025-A, 92025-B, 92025-C
- Squishon 2 – 91033-2
The recalled devices were manufactured and distributed from July 2012 to August 2014.
The Gel-E Donut and Squishon 2 gel-filled devices are used in NICU and PICU settings. The Gel-E Donut cradles a baby’s head to help ease pressure caused by long periods of stillness. The Squishon 2 provides support to the stomach area when an infant is lying face down (prone position).
Products like these can help sick babies, but companies making them need to take extra care to make sure they are not contaminated with dangerous molds or bacteria.
