Medtronic Tissue/Bone Graft: Lawyer Fred Pritzker Provides Information

Medtronic, Inc., of Minneapolis, Minnesota, through its spokesman Bert Kelly, says that it received at least 8,000 human tissue pieces that originated with Biomedical Tissue Services (BTS). BTS illegally harvested human tissue, including bones, from cadavers at funeral homes. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), BTS did not screen the donors, nor did it do any testing on the tissue for diseases such as HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, or syphilis. This was in violation of federal law [21 CFR 1270].

Medtronic used the illegal BTS tissue to make bone grafts for spinal surgery and other surgical procedures. According to a report by KRIB, Mason City, Iowa, “Medtronic’s spine division reports using some of the parts they received indirectly from the company being investigated, BTS, thinking they had been thoroughly cleansed and sterilized.” According to the same article, as many as 25 patients at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa could have received Medtronic tissue and bone graft products that had originated as BTS illegally-harvested, unscreened human tissue. The hospital has informed patients and offered to test them for HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and syphilis.
